Elastin is a major component of elastic fibers found in theextracellular matrix of many tissues, for which elasticity is ofgreat importance. Elastin is an insoluble molecule formed from manymonomers of water-soluble tropoelastin. Tropoelastin is encoded bya single-copy gene, but alternative splicing of transcripts resultsin various isomeric forms of the protein,each with a molecularweight of approximately 70 kDa.
